Cedars: Parish running short of office space

Increasingly cramped working conditions in office and administrative spaces has parish government looking for ways to expand facilities.
At the Aug. 20 council meeting, Parish President Chester Cedars said that the cheapest and best solution may be to enlarge the existing building at 301 W. Port St. Other solutions are still being contemplated but, Cedars said, cost considerations and the advantages of keeping parish functions under one roof appear to favor adding to the existing building.

The Village of Parks will soon get the new village hall building officials have worked toward for many years.
At its Aug.15 meeting, the village council approved architect Glenn Angelle’s recommendation to award the contract to the lowest responsible bidder, JC Construction LLC of Broussard. Angelle told the council the base bid amount, $892,000, is lower than the initially projected cost.

Agenda issue sparks heated discussion

The unilateral decision by Mayor Melinda Mitchell to remove an item from the Aug. 20 St. Martinville City Council meeting agenda brought a tense exchange between the mayor and council members.
Dist. 2 representative Craig Prosper was upset that the mayor removed an agenda item concerning a delay in advertising for bids from wholesale electricity providers. Mitchell had sought a delay in publishing the first of three required advertisements for bids to better familiarize herself with the contract options.

BSA ‘Swamp Base’ will be big boost for parish

Ben Pierce, executive director of the Swamp Base project for the Boy Scouts of America’s Evangeline Area Council, attended the Aug. 13 meeting of the Henderson Town Council, briefing officials on the project.
Pierce presented a detailed update on the Scouts’ ambitious plans for their recently-acquired 62-acre property along the West Atchafalaya Protection Levee previously occupied by MeGee’s Landing. The Swamp Base will eventually feature a multi-story complex that will include a 200-seat restaurant and beds for 250 scouts and non-scout visitors.
