SM recall petition stirs controversy

In a judicial hearing still underway at press time on Tuesday St. Martinville Dist. 3 Councilman Dennis Paul Williams is seeking damages resulting from a delay in producing the list of names on a petition to remove him from office.
According to Williams and his attorney, Allan Durand, a copy of the petition with signatures was not produced within three business days as required by law. But recall custodian Deja Alexander and her attorney, Xavier Alexander, contend that particular circumstances allow five days for a response.

TECHE Project to unveil new information kiosks

Breaux Bridge – The TECHE Project will reveal the first information kiosk for the Bayou Teche National Paddle Trail at a special 4 p.m. ceremony in Breaux Bridge on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at Parc des Ponts. An information kiosk will be placed at each of the 15 trailheads along Bayou Teche and the Lower Atchafalaya River from Port Barre to Patterson. These kiosks will orient trail users to the bayou and present the special stories of the 15 trail communities.

Workers last week finally began installing the new artificial turf on the Breaux Bridge High School football field and appeared to be just past the halfway mark when this picture was taken on Aug. 31. Flood wall delay could result in legal action

After more than eight years of planning, engineering studies, permitting and funding work, St. Martin Parish government does not intend to be prevented from building a flood wall to protect the Bayou Estates subdivision in Lower St. Martin Parish.
Engineer Mo Selah, of Professional Engineering and Environmental Consultants Inc. has led the multi-year evaluation and planning process to find a solution. He presented a description of the result at the Aug. 20 Parish Council Administrative/Finance Committee meeting.

Mayor’s event aims to motivate girls

Mayor Melinda Mitchell plans to host a “Par-Tea!” at the Duchamp Opera House, 200 S. Main St. on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 11 a.m.
The event is for girls ages 6 through 17 and their mothers. “I want to motivate girls and young women,” Mitchell said, “I want them to accept that they are special, that they are somebody, and that they are royalty.”
