Parks Reopen – The COVID crisis is far from over, but barricades were removed from park entrances last weekend. At Parc des Ponts in Breaux Bridge, above, and St. Martinville’s Magnolia Park and local residents wasted no time in getting out in the fresh air. Distancing recommendations are still in effect, but boat ramps, walking trails and shady places to sit and listen to the sounds of the outdoors were in use and more appreciated than ever. FACE MASKS — The distribution of free face masks, provided by the Hanes Corp., on April 29 drew long lines across St. Martin Parish. At left, Henderson Detective James Thibodeaux and his son, Gavin, handed out more than 160 packs (800 masks) to local residents. At right, the line of cars awaiting masks in St. Martinville stretched from City Hall, up Evangeline Boulevard, and across Main Street at times. Nat’l Prayer Day to be observed

As approved by Governor John Bel Edwards, and in accordance with the guidelines of the Office of State Fire Marshal and Louisiana Department of Health, St. Martin Parish will join in the National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 7, at 6:30 p.m. on the St. Martin Parish Courthouse lawn on Main Street in St. Martinville.
The side streets adjacent to the Courthouse will be closed to allow seating for proper social distancing.

Meter access an issue

The St. Martinville city council will now require that residents provide ready access to water and electric meters to be read at any time.
At the May 4 council meeting, at which attendance was again limited to meet COVID-19 requirements, attorney Allan Durand told the council that, surprisingly, no ordinance seems to exist requiring consistent access to meters.

Purchase orders, targeting resurface at SMCC meet

Concerns about long delays in getting purchase orders signed and alleged targeting of city employees were again a source of tension for the city council during Monday’s meeting.
A possible solution to purchase order delays had been approved in March providing that if Mayor Melinda Mitchell failed to sign a P.O. within three days of receiving it, Mayor Pro Temp Craig Prosper was authorized to approve payment if the funds are in the budget and the council has approved the expenditure.
