Out with the old, in with the new — Wooden bridges along the Atchafalaya Basin levee, like this one on LA 3083 over Bayou Alexandre near Coteau Holmes (at left), and other classics like the Butte La Rose pontoon bridge are picturesque and bring back memories, but they are rapidly disappearing. This new two-lane, concrete replacement was finally completed earlier this month. (Karl Jeter)

New bridge finally open

After years of delay, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has opened the new bridge across Bayou Alexandre east of Coteau Holmes to traffic.
The two-lane concrete structure replaces the wooden, one-lane bridge that dates back to 1950 and connects LA 3083/Bayou Alexandre Hwy to LA 352/Bayou Benoit Levee Hwy which provides access to Lake Fausse Pointe State Park to the south and Catahoula and Henderson to the north.

DISINFECTING PARK – A cleaning contractor disinfects one of the pavilions at Cecile Rousseau Poche Park in Parks on Tuesday, April 28. Pavilions, restrooms and playground equipment will all be disinfected again in mid-May, Mayor Kevin Kately says. (Karl Jeter)

Parks won’t rush recovery

Like all area municipalities, the Village of Parks would like to see the end of school closures, empty stores, barricaded park facilities and other restrictions on normal operations.
But during a brief April 28 village council meeting, Mayor Kevin Kately said his administration will continue to take all necessary precautions to keep residents safe.
Members of the general public were excluded from the meeting and most attendees donned masks and maintained the recommended distance from one another.

Stay home extended to May 15

Hopes for an April 30 end to Governor John Bel Edwards’ “Stay at Home” order were dashed Monday when the governor announced that the order would be extended to May 15.
Edwards said the extension was necessary to “continue to slow the spread of COVID-19” as Louisiana does not currently meet the White House criteria for entering Phase One of reopening.
The White House criteria calls for declining numbers of new cases and hospitalizations, among other things.
