Breaux Bridge downs Gators, 51-16

Kickoff for Breaux Bridge’s game against Ascension Episcopal was delayed for more than an hour, but when play finally got underway the Tigers got rolling.

Using a bruising running attack, the Tigers raced to a 26-9 halftime lead and never looked back on their way to a 51-16 victory over the Blue Gators.            Senior running back Christian Matthews turned in a workhorse

performance, carrying the ball 35 times for 254 yards and four touchdowns.

And QB Kelby Hypolite was not far behind, scoring three TDs on 17 carries with 139 yards.

The Bridge took a 13-6 first quarter lead and stretched it to 26-9 by intermission.

The Tigers added 13 more points in the third period and 12 in the final stanza while Ascension managed just one second half touchdown.

Hypolite attempted only eight passes but completed six for 64 yards.

Senior defensive tackle Braxton Simon had a special night, recovering a Gator fumble and returning it 67 yards for a rare defensive touchdown. Simon was also credited with four solo tackles, and assist and one sack.

Other defensive standouts included junior Jay’den Chevalier who has six solo tackles and one assist, and senior Coddie Noel with four solo stops and four assists.

With the victory Breaux Bridge improved to 2-2 and returns home this Friday to host the 3-1 Teurlings Catholic Rebels.
