Shirley Thomas Romero

St. Martinville – A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 p.m. on Thursday, September 22, 2022 at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church for Shirley Thomas Romero, 85, who passed away on September 17, 2022, after a brief illness with her family by her side.

Visitation will be held at Pellerin Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. It will continue on Thursday from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

A rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. on Wednesday evening.

Rev. Jason Vidrine will officiate at the Funeral Mass. Readers will be Amy Bergeron Airhart and Dexter Bergeron. Gift bearers will be Kelly Bulliard, Ashley Guirard Landry, Claire Hayes and Kyra Bulliard.

Interment will follow at St. Michael Mausoleum.

Shirley was married to Robert Romero Jr. for 66 years. Together with four daughters, they have been blessed with an extremely close family who enjoy being together more than anything else. Shirley was employed by the St. Martin Parish school system for 27½ years as secretary at St. Martinville Primary followed by a few years at the school board office. Robert and Shirley are the owners and operators of Robert’s Lounge in downtown St. Martinville.

Shirley was born in St Martinville, Louisiana to Raouzel Thomas and Alida Fuselier Thomas on June 16, 1937, as the youngest of eight children. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, R.L.Thomas and Fred Thomas; her sisters, Helen Thomas Trail, Millie Thomas Broussard and Margaret Thomas Delahoussaye; her father-in-law, Robert Romero Sr.; her mother-in-law, Daisy Dugas Romero; and her oldest daughter, Yvette Romero Cartwright.  

She is survived by her husband; three daughters, Keely Romero Guirard (Robert), Elaine Romero Hayes (Steve) and Leslie Romero Bergeron (Dexter); 10 grandchildren, Lacke Bienvenu (Carmen), Jeff Bienvenu (C.C.), Nicholas Bulliard (Kayla), Kelly Bulliard, Ashley Guirard Landry (Nicholas), Sam Hayes, Claire Hayes, Derek Bergeron (Stacey), Drew Bergeron (Lauren) and Amy Bergeron Airhart (Colby); 17 great-grandchildren; one great- great-grandchild; and two sisters, Lucille “Tuttie” Billeaud and Aline Oubre.  

Shirley loved her family very much and spent as much time with them as she could, never missing an event. She was a devout Catholic as a member of St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church and enjoyed her weekly holy hour in the Adoration Chapel. 

She loved shopping, the Saints and fantasy football, the casino, holiday decorating, going to the movies, sitting on her patio, beach trips (sitting at the breaking waves), boat riding in the Basin, socializing at Robert’s, and she loved spending time with her dear friends and birthday club.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Lacke Bienvenu, Jeff Bienvenu, Nicholas Bulliard, Sam Hayes, Derek Bergeron and Drew Bergeron.

Honorary pallbearers will be her great-grandsons, Keagan Bienvenu, Kameron Bienvenu, Austin Bienvenu, Landon Bienvenu and Kayden Bulliard.  

The family would like to thank Hospice of Acadiana, especially Alyson Eastin Champagne and all the caretakers who showed such compassion during this difficult time.
