Breaux Bridge – A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 20, 2023, at St. Bernard Catholic Church for Joseph Leonard Angelle, 86, who passed away on Thursday, March 16, 2023, at his residence.

A visitation took place at the funeral home on Sunday from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and continued on Monday, from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

A rosary was prayed at 6 p.m. on Sunday by Deacon Butch Hebert.

Rev. Garrett McIntyre officiated at the Funeral Mass. Liturgy readers were Hailey Manning and Abbey McDermott. Gift bearers were Jessica Gomez and Lillian Grace.

Interment followed at St. Bernard Cemetery No. 2.

J.L. was born on September 1, 1936, in Atchafalaya, at a time when there were different communities in the Basin.  Later, his family moved to Henderson and then settled in Breaux Bridge.

He retired from the Louisiana Office of Alcohol Beverage Control after 28 years of loyal service. J.L. than began a lawn service servicing the Sperry-Sun South facility in Broussard until the facility was closed. There he made many friends, offering advice to anyone that was willing to listen to him.

J.L. was most content in the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman, having been taught both skills by his father. In his later years, he focused on sac-a-lait fishing but never shared any of his hot spots. For over 30 years, he supplied the Missionaries of Charity Sisters in Lafayette with an abundance of the fish he caught.

He loved visiting with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His love and devotion for them was immeasurable.  He was a faithful Catholic, attending Daily Mass and praying his Rosary. He was a keen observer of life events and people, which he often expressed in a witty and humorous manner filled with hearty laughter.

J.L. brought much joy to all of his family and friends.

J.L. is survived by his wife of 66 years, Barbara; his son, Tony (Jan) Angelle; his daughters, Ava-Marie (Ken) Quirk and Angela (Dwayne) Guidry; his sister, Lillian (Langdon) Hale; granddaughters, Hailey (Mark) Manning, Abbey (Michael) McDermott and Jessica (Benny) Gomez; his grandson, Francis (Kristina) Guidry, and his great-grandchildren, Lillian Grace, Gabriella, Mark Mosby, Isabella, Mary B. and Benjamin.

J.L. is preceded in death by two sons, K. Rock and Brian “T-Bone” Angelle; his sister, Betty; his brother, Larry; his parents, Roosevelt “Rock” and Lillian Angelle; his in-laws, Albert and Irene Broussard; and his brother-in-law, Antoine “Coochie” Broussard.

Pallbearers were Ken Quirk, Dwayne Guidry, Mark Manning, Michael McDermott, Benny Gomez and Francis Guidry.

The family would like to express our sincere appreciation for the hard work and dedication shown by the staff at Hospice of Acadiana. Their medical and spiritual support during this difficult time gave us the guidance to get through this most challenging transition.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to The Missionaries of Charity, 904 Jack Street, Lafayette, LA 70501.

Pellerin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
