Missing funds spark talk of investigation

The subject of state intervention into the city’s financial affairs marked one of the most contentious council meetings since the start of Mayor Melinda Mitchell’s administration last July.
During Monday’s council meeting, rumored accounting discrepancies as well as misplaced checks and money orders brought suggestions that it may be time to seek a State Police investigation. At issue were traffic ticket proceeds and funding sources for two police department programs.

FEMA funds to fix Levee Road?

Parish President Chester Cedars says a possible new avenue for funding repairs to the collapsed Henderson Levee Road is under consideration.
At the March 19 Public Works Committee meeting, held in the Henderson Recreation Center, Cedars said he just learned about the FEMA non-emergency project funding program at a Jan. 9 meeting. State legislators Fred Mills and Mike Huval, Henderson Mayor Sherbin Collette, Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) representatives and others were present at that meeting.

Bayou access expanding in Arnaudville

The town may be the site of a welcoming new trailhead facility with a pavilion and restrooms to accompany the floating dock already in the planning stage.
Offered for later consideration at the March 19 St. Martin Parish committee meeting in Henderson, was an ordinance allowing President Chester Cedars to enter into a cooperative agreement for the use of a half-acre of private land along the Bayou Teche near Arnaudville.

SM mayor: ‘I’ve been bullied’

In the midst of a chaotic two week period in which it was found that bills have gone unpaid for months, pay checks have bounced and a department head has been fired, Mayor Melinda Mitchell took to social media last Wednesday, March 20, to voice criticism of Councilman Craig Prosper.
“It’s time to break the silence,” she said, “I’ve been bullied, I’ve been yelled at, I’ve been told I would fail and totally disrespected by Councilman Prosper since my second week in office.”
She accused Prosper of working against her administration.

Flooding closes roads in Lower St. Martin

The St. Martin Sheriff’s Office has announced that, effective immediately and until further notice, Four Mile Bayou, Adell Edna and Landry roads in Lower St. Martin Parish are closed to all vehicular traffic except for residents who reside on those roads.
Drivers are reminded that attempting to go around barricades, ignoring warning signs or driving through standing water on the roadway can lead to deadly consequences.
