Bridge news – The Sept 17 St. Martin Parish Council Committee meeting was held at the Butte LaRose fire station, the last of the remote-location meetings for 2019. President Chester Cedars reported that, with grant funds now in the bank, it only remains for the bureaucratic wheels to turn a little while longer before a permanent replacement for the pontoon bridge will be a reality. Funds in hand for new Butte LaRose bridge

At the Sept. 17 St. Martin Parish Council committee meetings, held this month in Butte LaRose, the topic that got the most attention was the planned replacement of the community’s pontoon bridge along the East Atchafalaya Protection Levee.
The parish recently received Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA) bond sale proceeds in the amount of $9.5 million for the project.

Mayor’s authority clarified at Sept. 3 council meeting

The city council proceedings were a bit more orderly last Tuesday, Sept. 3, as respective duties and powers of the mayor and council were clarified by City Attorney Allan Durand.
Mayor Melinda Mitchell sought to revisit several rulings made after her failed attempt to abruptly adjourn the council’s Aug. 19 meeting. Mayor Pro Tempore Craig Prosper had continued the meeting as acting mayor after Mitchell and council members Juma Johnson and Edmond Joseph left the chambers and completed most of the remaining agenda items.

Hosp. Dist. 1 to turn over cash

Parish President Chester Cedars told members of the Parish Council last week that parish government will receive between $700,000 and $800,000 in cash as its portion of the settlement following the dissolution of Hospital District No. 1.
The district, established in 1963, served portions of northern St. Martin Parish and St. Landry Parish around the Arnaudville area and operated St. Luke Hospital for a number of years.
But the hospital closed years ago and the building has been vacant. The Hospital District was abolished in 2017.

DOTD to start improvements on W. Bridge St.

Breaux Bridge – The state Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has awarded a construction contract for improvements to a portion of West Bridge Street in Breaux Bridge.
Work is scheduled to begin on Monday, Sept. 16 on the $248,000 project that affects just under two-tenths of a mile of the street from its intersection with Berard Street west to Railroad Street.
The work is estimated to take place on Mondays through Fridays from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weather permitting.
