LFP cabins, campsites still closed

It’s been almost 15 months since the torrential rains of August 2016 flooded many parts of Acadiana. The record-breaking rainfall inundated many facilities at the Lake Fausse Pointe State Park, shutting down the popular RV campground and visitor cabins.
The entire park was flooded, in some areas to a depth of up to three feet. And the water lingered for several weeks before finally draining off.
And over the past year, heavy rains have caused additional flooding, to a lesser degree, on several occasions.

Canadian kayak team to train in Breaux Bridge

The Bayou Teche will be the new spring training site for Canada’s national kayak sprint team.
After visiting several prospective sites in the southern United States, team trainer Jerome Seremac made the announcement last month that Parc des Ponts was chosen. Seremac, the former Polish national champion and current trainer for the Canadian team, said the Bayou Teche and Breaux Bridge had all the qualities the team has been looking for.

Veterans Park upgrade makes good impression

The major revamping of Veteran’s Park got a full-throated endorsement from veterans and other attendees at the Veterans Day celebration on Saturday, Nov. 12.
At the Nov. 14 city council meeting, Mayor Ricky Calais said all comments he received were very positive. With the work at least 95 percent complete, Breaux Bridge now has a facility that shows the community’s high regard for its servicemen and women. Dist. E representative Gary “Bimmie” Champagne said “The look on the faces of the veterans said it all.”

Newcomers plan Mardi Gras fest

Ever since the cancellation of the 2016 Newcomers Club Mardi Gras parade, the future of St. Martinville’s largest and most raucous celebration has been uncertain. But a new approach has put Fat Tuesday back on the city’s event schedule for 2018.
For most of its 55 year history, the parade attracted large but manageable crowds. In later years, though, throngs in the thousands crowded in from all directions to eat, drink and catch flying beads. The parade grew into the biggest annual event in town. But the success of the parade became its downfall.

Fire destroys Henderson landmark

An early morning fire on Sunday, Nov. 19 destroyed Robin’s Hardware, a landmark in this small community. Henderson police officer Jordan Noel sounded the alarm around 1 a.m., Henderson, Breaux Bridge, Cecilia and Arnaudville fire departments responded to the blaze. It took several hours to get the fire under control.
